What is ESG?

ESG is the framework that is used to determine how sustainable an organisation or company is. It was typically used as a screening tool by the fund management industry but has come to prominence as a more widely used term in business and society.

It’s really clear now that businesses have to be a force for good. ESG gives us that framework to measure how we progress and create more impact.

Why does it matter?

Shifts in legislation and regulation now mean large, listed organisations have to report their carbon emissions. This along with the investor lens has landed ESG on the agenda at senior levels within organisations.

The business case for responsible business has been well made about how it’s important for engaging key stakeholders, such as employees. And most recently we know that a good understanding of ESG is good for business, society and environment.

The organisations really making it work are those thinking about how they create value through their products, their process, their people and their procurement. And they talk about that very holistically.

Insights from our ESG event

We were joined by Charlotte Turner from Bean Research, Joanne Goddard from Green & Good Consulting and Julia Bena from City & Guilds who shared best practice in ESG reporting, the benefits of demonstrating social and environmental value and governance of ESG.

I feel like the time has come where we are much more aware of both social and environmental issues thanks to developments in legislation and regulation.
